After his time at 3Rensho as the chief frame builder, Masahiko Makino went out to start his own brand of bicycles. One of the frames he built while at 3Rensho, won a gold medal in a 1000m TT event. Masahiko started with a small staff and still builds NJS approved frame sets for numerous elite racers to this day.
It is very difficult for NJS approved frame builders to go all out in constructing their frames because they must adhere to some pretty strict standards. The NJS agency (Nihon Jitensha Shinkōkai) started in 1957 by the Japanese Keirin Association. They wanted to prevent keirin riders from having an advantage because of the equipment.
San Makino Created Beautiful Lugs
NJS approved frame builders get around these limitations by creating beautiful finishes and lug work on their framesets. They also insert little touches here and there. Mr. Makino built a reputation by constructing very ornate, precision fitting lugs. This featured bicycle certainly demonstrates his craftmanship. His choice of the metalic purple paint really highlights the frame and lug work and we thought that having the word “Makino” casted into the seat stay lug was a very nice touch.
Masahiko started with Kaisei 8630 Nickel Cro-Mo Quattro butted tubing and steel dropouts. The owner continued the build with: Hatta headset and bottom bracket, Nitto Pearl stem holding onto the Nitto handlebars. The Sugino Super Mighty cranks turn the non NJS approved Mavic Open Pro wheels laced to the Phil Wood hubs. We carry on with Dura Ace aero seat post, Izumi chain and Selle SMP saddle. Since the NJS standards do not allow Ahead style stems, the Nitto quill stem was used.
